{"id":1716,"date":"2021-08-10T14:46:40","date_gmt":"2021-08-10T14:46:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.truthinlabeling.org\/blog\/?p=1716"},"modified":"2021-08-11T03:07:00","modified_gmt":"2021-08-11T03:07:00","slug":"sucker","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/truthinlabeling.org\/blog\/2021\/08\/10\/sucker\/","title":{"rendered":"Sucker?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>It sure is easy to get sucked into the \u201cMSG-is-safe\u201d advertising.&nbsp; Let\u2019s face it, they\u2019re very good.&nbsp; They\u2019ve hired the best.&nbsp; And we all can get pulled in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m embarrassed to tell you how many times I\u2019ve looked at the sentence \u201cMSG is the salt form of the amino acid glutamate, which occurs naturally in a wide range of protein-rich foods and vegetables, such as shrimp, seaweed, and tomato,\u201d and wondered if the sentence is designed to mean 1) \u201cMSG,\u201d a <strong>manufactured <\/strong>flavor enhancer, occurs naturally in food, or 2) \u201cglutamate\u201d occurs naturally in food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has only just occurred to me that the reader is <strong>supposed to<\/strong> come away with the idea that MSG occurs naturally in foods like shrimp, seaweed, and tomatoes. &nbsp;That, after all, is one of the glutamate industry\u2019s essential lies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The truth is that MSG is manufactured.&nbsp; It doesn\u2019t occur naturally in anything.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here the lie is just put more subtly than usual.&nbsp; Still, I can\u2019t believe how long it took me to recognize this as fine-tuned propaganda designed to leave you and me with the misconception in our heads that MSG occurs naturally in food.&nbsp; That\u2019s how good they are at deceptive and misleading advertising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In case you\u2019ve missed the glutamate industry\u2019s list of essential inaccuracies, misrepresentations, and deceptions we\u2019ve recapped it here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The six big fat lies&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>#1: The glutamate contained in MSG is identical to the glutamate in the human body<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>#2: MSG is very well researched and found to be safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>#3: It must be safe since the FDA has said so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>#4: MSG has been used for over a century without adverse reactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>#5: MSG is naturally made, similar to yogurt, vinegar and wine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>#6: Monosodium glutamate occurs naturally in food.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Actually:&nbsp;MSG is manufactured using genetically modified bacteria that excrete glutamic acid through their cell walls. In the United States, monosodium glutamate is produced in Ajinomoto\u2019s plant in Eddyville, Iowa.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/truthinlabeling.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/ajm_plant.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-393\" width=\"327\" height=\"189\" srcset=\"http:\/\/truthinlabeling.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/ajm_plant.jpg 369w, http:\/\/truthinlabeling.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/ajm_plant-300x174.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 327px) 100vw, 327px\" \/><figcaption>The Ajinomoto plant in Eddyville, Iowa <br><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Whopper<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Humans couldn\u2019t eat enough Manufactured free Glutamic acid (MfG) to cause the brain damage, endocrine disorders, and assorted reactions that the laboratory animals had experienced.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In addition to out and out lies, <\/strong>there\u2019s the question of the ethics of omission of facts relevant to the safety of a product. The FDA says that it is illegal to omit relevant information when describing drugs.\u00a0 That\u2019s what the drug inserts are all about.\u00a0 But according to the FDA \u2013 and the legislators who fund them \u2013 telling the whole truth about poisonous ingredients doesn\u2019t hold true for food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A big push has been launched in Nigeria to promote sales of MSG and the Nigerian branch of the Japanese company that now manufactures it.&nbsp; As always, the propaganda aimed at Nigerians is attractive, persuasive, and delivered by authorities, celebrities and other \u201cexperts.\u201d&nbsp; Following are snippets (all of them lies) taken from a July 25, 2021 article in Punch:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe safety of AJI-NO-MOTO\u00ae has long been scientifically proven and its safety approved by authorized agencies of the United Nations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAn extensive body of research which has been reviewed by scientists and governments around the world, including the US FDA, the American Medical Association, experts of the United Nation\u2019s Food and Agriculture Organization, World Health Organization and the European Commission\u2019s Scientific Committee for Food demonstrates that glutamate is safe.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUmami seasoning, according to [the subject of the interview] has been safely used as food ingredient since 1908 after it was discovered by a Japanese scientist, Dr. Kikunae Ikeda.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMSG\u2019s 113-years history of safety validated by health organizations across the globe,\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMSG is found naturally in some foods including tomatoes and cheese.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMSG does not cause allergy; it does not cause asthma\u2013 no link at all; it does not cause obesity; no adverse effect on the lung.
