{"id":2317,"date":"2022-09-27T15:45:54","date_gmt":"2022-09-27T15:45:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.truthinlabeling.org\/blog\/?p=2317"},"modified":"2022-09-27T15:45:57","modified_gmt":"2022-09-27T15:45:57","slug":"smartphone-labeling-of-genetically-modified-foods-ruled-unlawful","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/truthinlabeling.org\/blog\/2022\/09\/27\/smartphone-labeling-of-genetically-modified-foods-ruled-unlawful\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Smartphone\u2019 labeling of genetically modified foods ruled unlawful!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In a stunning victory against the USDA\u2019s sneaky approach to the labeling of genetically modified foods, a U.S. district court in California has ruled that labeling such foods with a QR code is \u201cunlawful,\u201d and additional disclosure options must be added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The case, filed by the Center for Food Safety (CFS) in 2020, was preceded by a two-decade effort by CFS to achieve labeling in the United States that clearly informs consumers as to the presence of genetically modified foods and ingredients \u2013 something already required in over 60 countries around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The QR code, which must be read with a device (such as a smartphone) was the culmination of years of devious proposals on how to best confuse shoppers as to the presence of GMO\u2019s in the supermarket. In 2018 the USDA attempted to push a smiley face icon or one with the letters \u201cBE\u201d coming out of the sun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alan Lewis, VP of Advocacy &amp; Governmental Affairs for Natural Grocers, one of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit calls the victory a \u201cwin for the American family\u201d who can now \u201cmake fully informed shopping decisions\u201d without using \u201cdetective work to understand what food labels are hiding.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more on the case and decision, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.momsacrossamerica.com\/qr_codes_in_lieu_of_gmo_labeling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">read this article at Moms Across America<\/a>, a true grassroots organization that has been in the forefront of fighting for meaningful labeling laws.
